Just a note of nostalgia. As a child, Union Hose fire house was a significant part of my life. After supper, a couple of evenings a week, my Dad would say, "let's go down the firehouse", take my hand and start walking his jaunty walk down Gordon Avenue. When my short legs started to lag, he lifted me up onto his shoulders, without missing a beat, and continued up Lawrence Avenue past Rescue Hose, where one of its heftier, mature members would be sitting in a wooden chair at the entrance, cigar in his cheek and a somewhat roughed-up-looking dog at his feet. As we approached, he'd shout out "Gino!" in a friendly manner as my Dad reached out to shake his hand and exchange pleasantries. Then back on our way down Beekman, greeting acquaintances along the way, and finally down Cortlandt Street, past Alter's and it's heavenly aroma, to our destination. The big front door to the firehouse was almost always open, a few of the guys inside. Then Dad would set me down on the floor, setting me free to roam within eyeshot while he hung with the guys and batted the breeze. At some point, he'd lift me up onto the gigantic firetruck where I'd sit in the driver's seat with a helmet on and ring the bell. The steering wheel was HUGE. Everything about the firetruck was HUGE. I both loved it and feared it at the same time. Having lived through the Depression, Dad was a very thrifty guy, so it was always a treat when he bought us an ice cold bottle of Coca-cola from the machine there to share. There was a pool table behind the truck and now and then someone would be playing. I'll always remember John Celante giving me a few lessons ("Scratch!!"). I liked the kitchen where Fat Charlie made his delicious eats for the guys and others fortunate enough to be there at the right time. I say "Fat Charlie" with affection, as that's the way we all knew him. To my baby sister, Serena, though, he was Pop-Pop and his wife was Nana. (I think Charlie's real name was Ettore Marsche, but don't hold me to it or the spelling.). I loved going to the firehouse with my Dad. I felt kind of special because I knew that other kids didn't get to have this experience. I loved everything about it, including the walk to and from. The firehouse was a cool, adventurous place to be and I loved that my father didn't mind taking us with him. I'd give anything to go back to those days.

My son Matthew is a CA Hotshot on the Yarnell Fire in Arizona. His 3rd great grandfather was James Bird, Chief Engineer for SHFD 1878-1886. Please pray for the families of the 19 fallen heroes, the lone survivor, and those still battling the inferno. God bless them all.

A huge thank you to Capt. Keith Okie for showing us around Thursday at your station. It was not only nice to meet you but to sit and share FF stories was really a treat. Your trucks are amazing and your hospitality was so very generous. Wish we could have stayed longer as your house made me feel like a home away from home. Thank you so much and add me on facebook if you wish.
Warm Regards,

My great great grandfather was JAMES BIRD, your Chief Engineer 1878-1886.
He'd be so proud of my son, a Marine Vet who served in Iraq and who now is a Hot Shot Firefighter in Angeles National Forest, CA. My Matthew must have inherited the firefighter gene! God bless all you do to keep your neighbors safe. Hope to visit Tarrytown for the first time later this year or next and retrace my ancestor's footsteps.

We visited Sleepy Hollow for the Halloween festival and the Horseman's Hollow, and Met (if we remember correctly) Captain Faustino, who introduced us to your beautiful new apparatus. It's a fascinating town you have, and we loved the haunted hayride. We were told you would send your FD patches to us if we signed in... and our chief is overjoyed at that thought! Thanks for your service!
