One man is in critical condition, and a female passenger is in serious condition, after a police chase ended in a car crash late Saturday night.
The pursuit began in Tarrytown and ended on New Broadway in Sleepy Hollow when the 1993 Honda Civic collided with a parked Toyota Tundra truck at about 11:40 p.m.
"I was going to sleep and I heard sirens and then I heard a sound that was really strong," said Cesar Cardenas, who lives on New Braodway where the accident occurred.
The collision happened at a high rate of speed, rescuers said, causing the Tundra to hit and damage another four cars behind it.
Both passengers had to be extracted from the vehicle. Sleepy Hollow firefighters and members of the Sleepy Hollow Ambulance Corps pried open doors and used hatchets and the jaws of life to peel back the car's frame and hood to gain access to the individuals inside.
The driver appeared to be unconscious when he was removed from the car. Both were rushed to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
The Tarrytown Police Department is heading up the investigation into the matter. Police Detective Sgt. Gene Buonanno said that the chase started when the driver crossed a double yellow line. ?
"One of our police department members was driving south on Broadway when he observed this vehicle driving on the other side of the road," Buonanno said. "He (the Civic) pulled over momentarily and then he took off and fled at a high rate of speed and this is where he ended up... They both have extensive injuries."
?Tarrytown resident Shaun Lewis, who was at the scene of the accident, said he was friends with the driver of the Honda Civic (we won't be releasing names of the those involved until police provide us the information).
Lewis said a group of friends had been driving around town when the Civic decided to illegally pass and drive to the front of the group of cars.
"We were just driving and he was just playing on the road and the cop saw him; you're not suppose to cross that double yellow line," Lewis said. "He jumped the line and he decided to run for it, I was trying to call him to tell him not to do that, and he decided to take the shortest route."?
Lewis ended up in front of the Civic after the car had pulled over briefly. It was only when his friends turned around further up North Broadway that they realized what had happened to their friend.
"He must have got nervous and lost it," Lewis said. "We were just out having fun, we didn't know he was going to ?do this." |
