Chief Engineers of the Sleepy Hollow (North Tarrytown) Fire Department
Chief Engineers were elected to a one year term, which began every April and ran to the end of the following March. The department had a rotation for the position so that every company had one Chief Engineer every five years. The rotation started with the oldest company (N.T. Fire Patrol) and ended with the youngest company (Columbia Hose) before the cycle started again.
Each Chief Engineer has a First Assistant Chief and a Second Assistant Chief. Traditionally, a firefighter runs for election for the Second Assistant Chief position, followed by the First Assistant Chief position and finally the Chief Engineer’s position. Time spent in the lower positions, gives each person time to get educated and acclimated to the position of ultimate responsibility in the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department.
